In 1894 Congress passed the law that made the first Monday of September a national holiday to celebrate the American worker, whose labors have raised the standard of living and contributed to the greatest productivity of any country in history.
It is debated who first had the idea for Labor Day, but according to the Department of Labor, it comes down to two men. Peter J. McGuire of a Carpenters union or Matthew Maguire of a Machinist’s union, one of which first had the notion that would eventually be the holiday we celebrate today.
Regardless of who gets the credit, it is fitting we all celebrate the efforts our countries workers make every day. The American worker be they a carpenter, mechanic, nurse or farmer all deserve to be thanked for helping build the country we benefit from.
Happy Labor Day to all.
