More Americans voted in the presidential election of 2020 than in any prior year which is obvious proof of the interest politics has had for citizens in this recent cycle.
What is not so obvious, especially given the intense acrimony, the heinous attack on the capital and numerous pundits is the view that our first President had on the underlying nature of public service of our nation’s highest officer, and one would assume by extension, officers of all other levels.
This excerpt of George Washington’s inauguration speech, is noteworthy and should be a guiding message, again:
“I behold the surest pledges, that as on one side, no local prejudices, or attachments; no seperate views, nor party animosities, will misdirect the comprehensive and equal eye which ought to watch over this great assemblage of communities and interests”
It is written that Washington was quite worried about his role as our nations first President and his inaugural speech is full of humble and reflective feelings. But it is also clear from his short speech that objectively representing the country was the highest order of the newly created role.
As citizens we collectively may have lost some understanding of the underlying nature and purpose of representative government and selfless service intended for our elected officials. The polarized nature in the world we live in exacerbated by digital non-stop and fragmented media makes this all the harder. However, this connected world does give us access to what our founders wrote and intended to build in this country, including the office of the Presidency.
For this Presidents Day 2021, may we all take a little time to learn about the true purpose and intent of public servants and commit to demanding that they live up to those ideals.
